The Perfection & Scotty Rumble Studio Mix...

1hr 20mins

TWO TIGHT CUNTS – DJ SCOTTY & DJ PERFECTION

Sometimes it’s very difficult to write reviews of Mixes because words and music are an incompatible medium. By this I mean that the music usually speaks for itself. If you like the tunes, you don’t necessarily know why you like them, or why you like the mix, you just do, and one mix I’m certainly just liking at the minute is Two Tight Cunts by Norwich’s DnB favourites DJs Perfection and Scotty.

Just to give you a quick run down, in case you’ve been sleeping for the last 15 years only to awake into a strange musical soundscape, unfamiliar and strange. Perfection is the head honcho of East Anglia’s premier DnB throw-down, Rumble, and has been for quite some time now. His knowledge and skill on the scene has led him to create his own label, “Total Intagration” or TI for those in the know.

So back to the review of this here mix then… Rather than just being the usual wind-down of the country’s favourite DnB cuts backed by the up and coming tunes of the next era, Perfection and Scotty have taken us off the beaten track with some rare and bold tunes, backed by a showcase selection of the latest cuts from the TI label. This makes a great sampler for the casual listener and DnB addict alike.

From the few notes on this mix the music picks you up and never lets you down. At points you feel like you’re stuck in a room with two chainsaws fucking on the back bench, at other points its like you’re trapped in a big dark fridge; a very cold big dark fridge. If Perfection and Scotty were aiming to take you on a musical journey through the different dark-sides of the DnB experience then they’ve hit the nail right on the head. From growling basslines through upbeat Ragga samples and remixes this disc not only shows aspects of the great music that the boys are creating but also gives you a glimpse into the skill they possess in tune selection and their ability to hold your interest right the way through the mix.

As said, this mix doubles up as a showcase spectacular for the TI label, so I think it’s best to mention the cuts and slices served up for the listeners pleasure that pleased me most. Firstly, Ice Dread, the opening number, is a spine-tingling knife edged belter that crashes into your eardrums as it digresses into Ragga lined breaks. The tune progresses with an ace chasing beat backed by the sound of your stereo about to fuse, blow up and kill you in the process.

Every mix should contain a varied selection of both the old and the young, but with the cutting edge techniques available it’s about presenting something classic in a new way. The tune that really hits this switch for me is 2nd Hand Funk, a remix of Adam F’s late nineties jump up staple, Brand New Funk. The arrangement is crisp and concise leaving enough tribute to the original to remind you of where the goods came from.

My final pick of the bunch is Chilly Palmer, a track named after Travolta’s music industry playing wise guy in the film “Get Shorty”. Perhaps there’s a message for us here? The tune is a buzzing concoction of creeping licks over a strung out break-beat, with a scant vocal sample suggesting something sinister in the background. This tune simply works for me.

So overall, this mix offers something for the heavy, heavy, DnB scene-heads with enough variance and melody to impress the more casual break-beat fancier. A superbly segueway of contemporary rhythms I’m certainly going to be putting this one in my collection and giving it another listen very, very shortly. This is CD is a brilliant example of the dirty skills and low down techniques that are going to keep the dance-floors of Rumble rammed for a very, very long time.
